Overview

When you think of “style” you might associate it with things like clothes and hairstyles. In many ways, this is a good metaphor for understanding style in writing. Unlike the grammar of a language, style is something that is a little more subjective. In other words, it is more likely to be a matter of opinion, and likely to someday change. Just like the brief but glorious time of full bell-bottoms, sometimes there isn’t a compelling reason why certain elements of writing styles are emphasized. Even our spelling in English has undergone quite a transformation in the past few hundred years.

This section provides guidance and suggestions about elements of writing that don’t quite fit under the grammar section. In many ways, following some of the suggestions will help you create writing that is more polished and may be more appropriate for specific purposes.
